Papua New Guinea Washed Typica

A washed Typica grown at 1,500–1,800 metres in the Eastern Highlands around Goroka — high enough, and remote enough, to produce something genuinely distinctive, and our first-ever Papua New Guinea coffee. It’s farmed by smallholders working plots of around 0.7 hectares, the kind of small-scale, hands-on production that Papua New Guinea does better than almost anywhere else, across a combined 1,435 hectares in this production area.

With road access to nearby towns limited, farmers wash the coffee themselves before selling it as parchment to village traders. From there it travels to a dry mill for hulling, cleaning, grading, and packaging, before shipping out via Lae.

That matters because of who’s growing it. Coffee has been grown in PNG since the 1800s, but it’s smallholders – not the colonial-era plantations that once defined the industry – who now grow around 95% of the country’s coffee, farmed by roughly 400,000 growers nationally. This lot is part of that shift: a cup shaped by a valley, a farm, and a family, rather than an estate.
